Catania Weather

Sicily is a beautiful island that lies off the west coast of Italy. It is the largest region in Italy and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea taking up over 25,000 square kilometres.

The island has varied terrain with a combination of volcanic and non volcanic mountain ranges with Mount Etna to its east. In the west, south east and north of the island there are non volcanic mountain ranges which have an affect on the weather conditions for towns that lie either in the rain shadow of the ranges or at higher altitudes.

Catania offers a fairly typical Mediterranean climate with long hot summers and cooler, drier winters which last from December to February.

The best time to visit Catania is in the Spring and Autumn when the temperatures are warm but have not yet reached the extreme highs of over 30ºC that the summer months often bring. The southern and western coasts are the warmest as these are the areas that are closest to Africa.

Whatever time of year you visit Sicily you can enjoy its rich culture and fabulous food and wine.

Below is a weather chart detailing the annual monthly temperatures for Catania.

Finally if you are thinking of hiring a car to get around and explore places off the tourist track then it is worth considering booking one with air conditioning - especially during the summer months.
